Mixed Match Reports

The mixed team did battle on home turf this time against a spirited Cholsey team in fine, sunny weather. First up, Richard M and Julia took on the second (very young) pair of Steffi (yes, named after THAT Steffi) and David. After coming to terms with powerful baseline hitting on both wings from Steffi, and extreme movement from David the guile and precision of the Shiplake pair won out 2 sets to love.

Stunning weather greeted the team as we pulled into the Abingdon Club car park. After knocking up and becoming acquainted with the somewhat slower (than STSC) hard courts we settled into our first round.
It was astonishingly symmetrical with Marcus and Sharon splitting 2 sets 5-7, 7-5 and John and Sally doing the same 6-4 4-6. All square at half time!
The second rubbers were not so even with Marcus and Sharon prevailing 6-2, 6-3 but John and Sally finding the going harder with a narrow 4-6, 3-6 loss.
Match tea was astonishingly prolific with ham, hummus and cucumber, and Avocado tomatto and basil sanwiches, with some delicious “Delia” CHeesy bites followed by 2 different cakes (Vegan carrot cake and an annular coffee drizzle cake). Really “quite acceptable” !!
Thanks to our opp Bernadette, Fiona, Peter and Richard for making this an excellent afternoon’s tennis. And cake.
